What makes a good URL slug
A URL slug is the readable part of a web address that identifies a
specific page — the part after your domain, like
/best-plumber-mumbai. A good slug is short, lowercase, uses
hyphens (not underscores or spaces) to separate words, and contains only
letters, numbers, and hyphens — no punctuation, symbols, or special
characters that could get mangled by a browser, a copy-paste, or a
third-party link shortener. Clean slugs are easier to read at a glance,
easier to share verbally or in print, and easier for search engines to
parse alongside your page title.
What this tool actually does to your text
This generator runs your title through several passes: it lowercases
everything, strips accents and diacritics (so "Rāj" becomes "raj" and
"Café" becomes "cafe"), removes apostrophes entirely rather than turning
them into stray hyphens (so "Rāj's" becomes "rajs", not "raj-s"), and
converts a handful of common symbols into words instead of just discarding
them — & becomes "and", @ becomes "at",
% becomes "percent", and ₹ becomes "rs". Every
remaining run of spaces or punctuation collapses into a single hyphen, and
any leading or trailing hyphen is trimmed. As a worked example:
"Rāj's Café & Bar — 100% Veg!" becomes
rajs-cafe-and-bar-100-percent-veg.
Devanagari and other non-Latin scripts
Business names and titles in Hindi and other Devanagari-script languages
are transliterated to readable Latin letters rather than simply stripped
out — a naive slug generator that only keeps a-z0-9 would turn
a Devanagari title into an empty string, which is a broken, useless URL.
This tool maps Devanagari consonants, vowels, and vowel signs to their
closest Latin sound-alikes instead, so a title like
"नमस्ते दुकान" produces a real, readable slug rather than
nothing at all. Titles in other non-Latin scripts this tool doesn't
specifically transliterate still never produce an empty slug — a safe,
deterministic fallback slug is used instead.
Need to generate slugs for a whole batch of page titles at once? Switch to Bulk mode above, paste one title per line, and get a slug — with a length check — for every line in one pass. Any slug over 60 characters is flagged, since very long slugs get truncated in search results and are harder to share. Once your URLs are ready, a free BizGo business page gives every business a clean, memorable page URL automatically — see the box above to get started.
Frequently Asked Questions
Accented letters are converted to their plain Latin equivalent (e.g. "Rāj" becomes "raj", "Café" becomes "cafe"), and apostrophes are removed entirely rather than turned into a hyphen — so "Rāj's" becomes "rajs", not "raj-s".
Common symbols are converted into words instead of being discarded: "&" becomes "and", "@" becomes "at", "%" becomes "percent", and "₹" becomes "rs" — so the meaning behind the symbol survives in the slug.
Devanagari-script text (Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit) is transliterated to readable Latin letters rather than stripped out, so a Hindi title produces a real, non-empty slug. Other non-Latin scripts always produce a safe fallback slug rather than an empty result.
This tool flags any slug over 60 characters — long slugs get truncated in Google search results and are harder to read, remember, and share, so shorter is generally better once the slug is still clearly descriptive.
Yes — switch to Bulk mode, paste one title per line, and every line gets its own slug and length check, with a "Copy all slugs" button for the full list.
