Reverse GST Calculator
Already have a final, GST-inclusive price — from a receipt, a customer invoice, or an MRP tag — and need to know the original base amount and how much of it was tax? Enter the price below; this tool always works backward from a GST-inclusive amount.

What is a reverse GST calculation?
Most GST calculators only go one way — you give them a base price and they add tax on top. A reverse GST calculation runs the math backward: you already know the final price a customer paid (from a receipt, an MRP tag, or a UPI payment), and you need to work out how much of that amount was the original price and how much was tax. This matters for accounting, filing returns, and simply understanding your real margin on a tax-inclusive price you quoted.
The formula is base = final price × 100 / (100 + GST rate),
and the tax is whatever's left: tax = final price − base.
Working it out by hand is easy to get slightly wrong on rounding — this
calculator does it in whole paise with a single rounding step, so the base
and tax you see always add back up to the exact final price you entered, to
the paisa.
Worked example
A customer paid ₹1,180 for a service billed at 18% GST, intra-state. Reversing it: base amount = 1,180 × 100 / 118 = ₹1,000, tax = ₹180, split as ₹90 CGST + ₹90 SGST. That's the exact same result you'd get by forward- calculating ₹1,000 + 18% GST in the other direction — both tools share the same underlying math, so they never disagree.
When to use this instead of the forward GST calculator
Use this reverse calculator whenever the number in front of you is already a final, tax-inclusive amount — an MRP-labelled product, a total on a bill, or a lump sum a customer transferred you. If instead you're starting from a base price and need to work out what to charge, use the GST Calculator and pick "Add GST" — both pages read from the same paisa-accurate module, so switching between them never produces conflicting numbers.
Once your invoices are sorted, put your GST number and billing details on a free BizGo business page so customers always have your correct details on hand — see the box above to get started.
Frequently Asked Questions
It takes a final price that already includes GST and works backward to find the original base amount and the tax hidden inside it, using base = final price × 100 / (100 + GST rate).
Yes, always — both tools call the exact same underlying calculation, so entering the same final price and rate on either page produces identical results, to the paisa.
₹180 is GST (₹90 CGST + ₹90 SGST for an intra-state sale, or ₹180 IGST for an inter-state sale), and ₹1,000 is the original base amount.
Yes. The tax figure is always calculated as final price minus base amount (both already rounded to the paisa), so the two never fail to add back up exactly — even on odd amounts.
Yes — type any rate, including decimals, into the rate field. The chips are shortcuts for the four standard slabs only.
