HSN/SAC Code Finder with GST Rate

Type a product or service name (e.g. "biscuits", "salon services", "mobile phone") or paste a code (e.g. "9983") to find its HSN/SAC code and current GST rate. Everything runs in your browser after the first small data file loads — nothing you type is sent to any server.

What is an HSN/SAC code, and why does the rate matter?

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) codes classify physical goods, and SAC (Services Accounting Code) codes classify services, for GST purposes. Every invoice you raise needs the right code and the right GST rate — get either wrong and you risk under-charging (a compliance problem you'll have to make up later) or over-charging (a customer complaint, or a competitive disadvantage if a rival is quoting correctly). Since India's "GST 2.0" rate rationalization took effect on 22 September 2025, most goods and services now sit in one of two primary slabs — 5% or 18% — with a 0% (exempt) band for essentials and a 40% band reserved for specified luxury and sin goods, replacing the older four-slab 5/12/18/28 structure. That's a big enough shift that codes and rates you memorized years ago may now be wrong.

How to search this tool

Type what you sell — a product name like "biscuits" or a service like "salon services" — or paste a code you already have, like "9983", and this tool searches its dataset instantly in your browser. A small "common items" data file loads first and answers most everyday searches immediately; typing three or more characters that match a specific product/service category (or a numeric code prefix) quietly loads a deeper chapter-level data file in the background if one exists, so searches that need more depth still resolve without you doing anything extra.

Reading your result

Each result shows whether the code is an HSN (goods) or SAC (services) code, the official description, and the current GST rate. Where the same heading legitimately carries two different rates depending on a real, documented threshold — for example, apparel and footwear priced up to versus over Rs 2,500 per piece, or hotel rooms below versus at/above a Rs 7,500 nightly tariff — both bands are shown as separate results so you pick the one that matches your actual pricing, not a single averaged-out number that might be wrong for your business.

A note on this tool's dataset and its limits

This tool ships a curated, hand-verified set of roughly 215 real HSN/SAC headings — a substantial, practical set for a small or growing Indian business, not the full ~20,000-line CBIC tariff schedule. Codes are shown at the 4-digit heading level for most entries (which is exactly what CBIC requires on invoices for businesses under Rs 5 crore annual turnover), with a few 6-digit SAC codes used only where they're unambiguous and independently verified. See the "Last updated" date above, sourced live from the dataset file itself — if it's more than a year old, treat every rate here as a starting point to double-check, not a final answer, since GST Council notifications can and do change specific rates between our updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) codes classify physical goods; SAC (Services Accounting Code) codes classify services. Both are used to determine the correct GST rate and must appear on GST invoices.

This tool reflects the "GST 2.0" rate structure effective 22 September 2025 (primarily 5% and 18% slabs, with 0% exempt and 40% luxury/sin bands). The exact "Last updated" date is shown above the search box, read live from the dataset file — always verify with your CA before filing or invoicing, since GST Council notifications can change specific rates.

Some categories — like apparel and footwear priced above versus below Rs 2,500 per piece, or hotel rooms above versus below a Rs 7,500 nightly tariff — legitimately carry two GST rates for the same HSN/SAC heading depending on a value threshold. Both rates are shown as separate results.

Businesses with annual turnover under Rs 5 crore generally only need to show the 4-digit HSN/SAC heading on invoices; larger businesses need 6 digits. This tool shows headings at the 4-digit level for most entries, which covers the common case.
