What is a PIN code, and how does this tool search it?
A PIN (Postal Index Number) code is a 6-digit code India Post uses to route mail to the correct region, district, and delivery post office. Most areas have exactly one PIN code, but larger cities often split into several — a single city like Chennai or Delhi can span dozens of different PIN codes, one per neighbourhood or delivery zone. This tool searches both directions: give it a PIN code and it lists every post office registered under it (with district and state), or give it an area, locality, or post office name and it finds every matching PIN code.
Why a PIN sometimes maps to several post offices
A single PIN code often serves multiple post offices — one "delivery" office that actually delivers mail to addresses in the area, and several "sub" or "branch" post offices that share the same PIN for administrative purposes. That's why a PIN search here can return a list of cards instead of one result: each card shows the exact office name, its branch type (Head/Sub/Branch Post Office), whether it delivers mail directly, and the district, state, division, and circle it falls under.
Searching from an area name instead
If you only know a locality, city, or post office name — not the PIN — switch to "Area Name → PIN" and start typing. The search runs automatically once you've typed at least 3 characters (debounced briefly so it doesn't fire on every keystroke), and returns every post office whose name matches, along with its PIN code.
If the lookup service is temporarily busy
Both directions depend on a free, third-party postal data service, which occasionally has a slow moment. If that happens, you'll see a clear "service busy" message instead of a blank page or a stuck spinner — just try again shortly, or check India Post's official website directly in the meantime. A PIN or search term that simply has no matches (a mistyped PIN, for example) shows a plain "no results" message instead — that's a normal outcome, not an error.
